owls, storms, and scary (and a giveaway)

As I write this there is a huge storm going on! We heard scary wind out of nowhere so I went outside to move my little plants I've been trying to grow onto the porch so they wouldn't get blown away. And then crazy thunder and lightening started, followed by rain. The south has the best rainstorms ever (just don't forget to unplug important things). I have to turn off the lights and open the blinds so I can watch everything. One time a storm started in the middle of the night so I had to go open the bedroom curtains to watch the lightening. Patrick decided it would be a great idea to tell me to imagine how scary it would be if when the lightening lit up the sky you could see a person standing at the window. I couldn't watch another storm for quite a while.

Now onto the main point of this post; a giveaway! I have been meaning to do one for quite awhile as a way to thank all of you for reading! I had no plans or ideas when I started this blog last year, but so far it has been amazing fun! I am very grateful that anyone would be interested in following along and reading the silly things I think up.

The main part of the giveaway is this little guy. I am making them to go into my etsy shop and I thought it would be fun to give one away before I do that. I am working on a host of characters, this owl just happened to be the first one. There will be a few other surprises thrown into this package as well!

To enter this giveaway leave me a comment stating an interesting/odd fact or story about yourself. For a second entry, blog or tweet about this and then come back with a link to post. This is open to all readers, even international. And you have until next Sunday, May 30th to enter. Just make sure to leave a way to contact you in your comments!

  1. How cute.

I understand about the lighting I grew up watching them out of windows with my mom.

I have this fond memory of watching it out the window with candles lit everywhere and we kept the tv on and watched Pete's Dragon

and when I lived a year in Kansas City I went to a Ben Harper Concert outdoors during my first huge Kansas City Thunder Storm, we all danced in the rain and then Ben has to play un-plugged because of the danger.

  2. I hate storms! They are scary but, that may be because most of the time they end up in tornadoes here.

I remember the only tornado I've ever been in and I was about 4 and we all ran outside and crammed into a storm shelter we had in our yard. It was my entire family, so 5 people, plus my grandma who was in a wheelchair. It was scary, I think I was about six.

P.S. that owl is the cutest thing ever! I remember seeing it when you posted a pic on twitter or something and I loved it! :)

  3. An odd fact about me is that I have watched Billy Madison at least 100 times with a very blobby girl.

I want to buy one of those for sure though. ADORABLE!

  4. that necklace is so cute. as soon as i started scrolling in my googlereader i was like I HAVE TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE WHERE CAN I GET ONE. and then turns out you're giving it away! i'm so excited. i'll probably buy one if i don't win!

odd fact: i don't have an appendix, i can't roll my tongue, i can't do the live long and prosper thing (i wouldn't do it anyway, star wars fan for life), and i'm obsessed with pokemon now.

  5. SO cute!! I adore that little owl!

Interesting fact: I'm trying my darndest to live almost entirely off of my backyard garden (and soon chickens) and it's the most fun I've ever had!

  6. That's so cute! Very good idea indeed.

My interesting/odd fact would be: I wake up in the middle of the night and check facebook on my phone constantly, and do stupid things because I'm half asleep, then forget about it when I wake up. One night at 5am I replied to a msg from someone who I was talking to and asked them out to dinner (the conversation had nothing to do with dinner). Last night I looked through the entire profile pictures of someone I didn't know because I thought she looked a bit like me. I kept saying to myself 'I'm tired, why are you doing this, go to sleep!' but in my half asleep state I didn't have enough will power to stop!

  7. I get nervous during thunderstorms! And that thing Patrick said about seeing a person during the lightening totally gave me shivers! *shudder*

Random fact: hmmm... I would love to live in the city at some point in my life but I'm scared to death of city driving so I probably won't ever live in the city. Small towns for me :)

  8. I wish we had more thunderstorms here, but we just settle for lots of wind and rain, without all the cool stuff.

    The owl is adorable!

As for interesting facts, hmm...well, I'm not sure if this is all too interesting, but there are certain things I can't do, like make my tongue into the hot dog bun shape or roll my 'rs. Thankfully, that's why I chose French instead of Spanish. :)

Random fact: I slammed my finger in the car door a few years ago, and now my middle finger is noticeably crooked and I have no feeling in the tip of it. Meaning, I can't feel when things touch it. Weird.

  12. I love the little owl!
Interesting fact- I feel like owls are my "spirit animal." I've had many different experiences with owls but most recently at midnight on my birthday I heard a Great Horned Owl in the tree hooting outside my window! (Which is very rare because there are not many owls in my part of town)...maybe it was wishing me a happy birthday :)

  13. Can I even dare think that I might win this one? It is the most gorgeous owl I have seen and I've seen a lot since I have weakness for owls!!
I can totally relate to your thunder post because I too love thunderstorms. I love watching the roar of the nature, its demonstration of strength and power. Though have to admit that the image of a person standing at the window you were offered by Patrick is quite blood-freezing!!

  14. haha I always think there will be someone outside my window at night or when I close the window they will leap up and grab my wrist I know it sounds stupid but I cant help it! hehe the owl is freaken adorable and for a random fact it's my 16th birthday tomorrow!

  15. That is seriously so adorable, I have my fingers crossed to win.

I also really love thunderstorms, to be more precise I love thunderstorms and rain on a warm summers night. It brings back a lot of memories thinking of thunderstorms actually.

Now to try and think of something unique that is interesting about me. Well I have a strange collection of silica gels, the 'do not eat' sachets in shoe boxes. I have no idea why or how I started collecting them, I just do. I'm actually currently doing an art project with them, thats why it came to mind.

  16. I love joining in, so I'm joining in here for you (and shall totally tweet at you too)... I just asked my Husbie what my odd thing is and he thought it was weird that I collected tram tickets. I had a lot of them and I never knew what to do with them and they're probably in a box somewhere. They change the colour around on them now, so I don't collect them anymore.

  18. I love watching storms. When I was little all my Mom could do to keep me inside was threatening ball lightning would follow and haunt me like a predator.

As for interesting/odd facts.. You know, that noise you get when you snap your fingers? I can't get that to work. No sound effects from my fingers.

  19. hmm, an odd fact.

my dad only spoke czech to me from the time i was born until i was 13 or so. i only responded in english. so now i'm stuck with only being able to understand czech, but i can't speak it or read it. i wish he made me speak czech back!

  20. Yesterday, as I was walking into church right on time, I got hit with a big old pile of bird poop. On my shirt. That smeared when I tried to flick it off. It was brown.

Luckily, I had an extra gym shirt back in my car. I hope no one saw me getting naked through my car windows in the church parking lot.

I think in China this is good luck?

Thanks for playing! ruthpclark at gmail dot com

  21. When I was younger, I really wanted to be a storm chaser, so whenever there was a big storm, my brother and I would stay out in it as long as possible (until my mom made us come in), then we would watch Twister.
I still love storms, although not this SNOW we are getting in UT right this very second.

Interesting, but sad fact: It is impossible for me to swim to the bottom of a pool because my rear end always bobs to the surface.

  28. This little bird is about the cutest thing I've seen - you really brightened my Monday! I can't wait to see these lil' guys show up in your shop.

One story about me is from the days of my misguided youth when I was in the Daisy Scouts (about 5 years old). We went to Sea World and saw the killer whales jumping through hoops and other giant attractions, but the thing that amazed me the most was a tiny tank of seahorses near the gift shop. I had only seen seahorses in cartoons and therefore assumed that they were mythical creatures like unicorns and fairies. Seeing one in front of me and realizing that they existed in real life boggled my mind and made me feel like anything could come true.

  36. Very cute necklace. I just found your blog today and I am also living in the savannah/hilton head area so it's been a lot of fun to read about your adventures in savannah.

I have 3 older sisters and when i was younger we had a pool in the backyard. They told me that there was a secret gate in the pool under the diving board that opens up and lets sharks out into the pool. I am 23 and to this day the deep end of any pool scares me.You would die laughing if you saw how quickly i swim to the side of the pool after jumping off a diving board.

Interesting fact: When I was 5 a tornado hit near our house. I remember my mom gathering all of us kids during the middle of the night and covering us with mattresses. The tornado ripped the tops of the trees on either side of our house, but left our house standing.

  39. i love storms! especially summer ones. at school, we once were forced to watch a documentary called "The Storm Hunter" or something like that anyway, about a slightly odd man who drove round looking at lightning. Everyone else thouht he was a proper freak but my secret thoughts were "oh my! that's my dream job"

sorry that fact was an interesting one so here's a better one:

when i have mundane dreams (you know the ones where you dream you've woken up and gotten ready for the day or just did ordinary things) i pretend that the waking up day is the dream and the boring dream reality. this leads to exciting and, well, dreamy days.

and oh my! what an adorable owl!!

  42. Hello - I have just recently discovered your blog (via liebemarlene vintage)and I love it. It feels as if I've stumbled across something really special. The best kind of discovery - unlike say, a person suddenly appearing at a storm lit window. Can't shake that image - thanks!

I would love to win the sweet little owl and show him the sights in England so, here is my fact (not sure how interesting it is - sorry!).

My (very young) blog is named after my first pet and my mothers maiden name (Minny Bouquet) - aka your "porn star" name. A very silly game (anyone else played this?) but luckily for me I love the combination!

  43. He is such a cute little guy!

I have a lot of odd stories about myself - I'm clumsy beyond belief and as my work mates have dubbed me "spatially awkward". I think an odd/interesting story that reflects this the most is the following:

The day after I turned 18, I was on holiday with my parents and little brother (10) in Tasmania. One freezing morning in Launceston we were both sleeping in top bunks at right angles to each other. I was awake and bored so decided to amuse myself by kneeling on the bed trying to pull my brother's quilt off him. After awhile he decided he was "too mature" for my games, closed his eyes and rolled over. Thinking I'd found my moment I lunged forward to grab his quilt. It was at this stage his eyes snapped open and with an evil glint he pulled his quilt beyond my grasp. Due to my complete dedication to the forward lunge, I found myself grabbing at air and falling face-first from the top bunk. I broke the fall from the top bunk with my head. I ended up with carpet burn down one side of my face, a blood nose, concussion and whiplash! The remaining holiday photos have me trying to cover one side of my face... I don't know how I manage these things!

  45. Oh, is this your first giveaway? No, you did the hair iron giveaway a while back. So this little hoot owl is felted? Did you knit him? Adorable .....

Ok, an interesting story (from the South) :

I was at "winter camp" in central Florida, and participated in the horse riding activity. It was a trail ride, so even though it was fun riding a horse, the trail part is boring. I was hoping for some adventure. Suddenly, a horse in front of me stepped on a hive of yellow jackets!!! The horses were getting spooked like no one's business, and some riders were even bucked off! Horses were going in all directions, riders were scurrying to safety or being spirited away by their horses. I saw this as my chance. With a mighty "YAH!" I kicked my horse's flanks and sped off into the distance at a gallop! Everyone was all right in the end, except for some yellow jacket stings.
